The Launch Years
What an eighteen- to twenty-five-year-old is developmentally working on, what they need from a grandparent, and the gifts that match it.
Eighteen- to twenty-five-year-olds are furnishing a first apartment, traveling on a thin budget, and learning to run a household, so the gifts that land are the practical ones they would not buy themselves: good bedding, a real tool kit, luggage, a decent pan, noise-cancelling headphones. Useful and slightly nicer than they would choose is the whole formula.
Eighteen to twenty-five is its own stage of life. New majors, new jobs, new cities, new relationships, and plenty of changes of mind. Researchers call it emerging adulthood: not quite a teenager, not quite settled, and full of possibility. The brain is still finishing its wiring the whole time.
Here is what is happening, and what it means for the way you show up.

Did you know?
These come from peer-reviewed studies. They are the kind of detail that changes how you play.
Brain structure and function keep changing through adolescence and young adulthood, and there is no study that found a cutoff at 25. The number comes from imaging studies that stopped enrolling participants in their mid-20s. A 2018 paper in a leading medical journal even proposed defining adolescence as ages 10 to 24. The point for a grandparent: it is fine to still be figuring things out at 23.

In a national study that followed U.S. teens into young adulthood, those who named a non-parent adult mentor, relatives included, had better outcomes in school, work, and health. Grandparents are natural candidates: long view, low pressure, no agenda.

Humans are one of very few species in which females routinely live decades past their child-bearing years. The leading explanation is the “grandmother hypothesis”: grandmothers improved their grandchildren’s survival enough to make a long life worth evolving. Church records from Finland and Quebec back it up, with one catch: the effect shrank with distance and disappeared beyond about 350 kilometers. Showing up has always been the whole job.
Sources: Chapman · Engelhardt
The researcher who named emerging adulthood found that changes in school, work, relationships, and address are typical of these years, not a sign that something is wrong. A grandparent who treats the fourth change of plans as normal is giving a gift.

Behind the list
Toy awards stop at the teen years, so for 18 to 25 we went to the editors who test gifts for this exact stage of life.
NBC’s shopping editors, whose lists of gifts for college students and new graduates are built from testing, reader feedback, and interviews with the people who receive them.
The site for parents of teens and twenty-somethings. Their gift guides for young adults are written by people who have one at home, and refined by a large reader community.
For the younger end of the range, we kept a handful of games and builds that won 2026 awards for the “kidult” or 18+ categories, because play does not stop at 18.
Gifts that fit the real texture of these years: a first apartment, a new city, a job search, a lot of travel, and the wish to feel at home. Each card says which part of that stage the gift speaks to.
A note from Alison
I am just starting that journey, so right now you will see only a few picks marked Gran Life Recommended. The rest earned their place by winning an award, or by being named in the gift guides above. As I test more, that gold badge will show up more often.
Gran Life Recommended — Alison has had this one in her own hands: used it with her grandchildren, or ordered and inspected it herself.
Gran Life Community Recommended — grandparents in The Gran Life Community have used this one and vouch for it.
